THE STRAND - HUNTINGTON BEACH'S LATEST OCEAN FRONT DESTINATION WITH SHOPPING, DINING AND BOUTIQUE HOTEL - CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING MAY 16

5/15/2009

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Ca.—May 15, 2009—Steps from the pier overlooking the ocean is a new downtown destination in Huntington Beach, The Strand. With a varied collection of shops and restaurants, a premier boutique hotel and office space, The Strand is a great attraction for residents and visitors. On Saturday, May 16, from noon to 9:30 p.m., the public is invited to help celebrate the official grand opening of The Strand with a festive "Block Party" featuring the dedication of its signature sculpture "Waterline," followed by a day-long series of activities, contests, live music and special store and restaurant events.

Festivities begin at noon when Huntington Beach officials and community members gather to dedicate "Waterline," created by renowned artists Jud Fine and Barbara McCarren known for their original and engaging public art programs. The curving sculpture inspired by the ocean's waves creates a visual landmark at the entrance from the pedestrian walkway connecting Main Street to 5th Street, The Strand's main thoroughfare.

Throughout the day music will rock the street starting with the band PawnShop kings and its amalgamation of rock, country, gospel and pop music at 1:30 p.m., sisters Meg & Dia and their five-piece band at 7:00 p.m. followed by The Maine at 8:00 p.m., an Indie rock band with two albums and a recent music video "Girls Do What They Want." Between live performances, radio stations Star 98.7 and KIIS 102.7 will be on-site with music and giveaways.

Restaurants and retailers at The Strand are offering a variety of in-store promotions and activities while contests and games for the whole family will take place on the street. These include:

  • 2:00 p.m. - RVCA Team signing at Active Ride
  • 3:00 p.m. - Ice cream eating contest at New Zealand Natural
  • 4:00 p.m. - Surfing champs Timmy Turner and Tom Curren signing at Rip Curl

Guests can also be among the first to visit Shorebreak, the new 157-room lifestyle boutique hotel created and managed by Joie de Vivre that opened May 12. Shorebreak blends modern beach culture with urban design and many four-star flourishes. Stop in for a tour of the hotel or sample the Mediterranean cuisine at Zimzala, the hotel's premier restaurant.

In addition to Shorebreak, The Strand features a collection of shops and restaurants that appeal to locals and visitors with Ra Sushi, Forever 21, Active Ride, Rip Curl, Merrilee's Swimwear, New Zealand Natural Ice Cream, CVS Pharmacy and an eclectic array of cart retailers. Opening soon will be Johnny Rockets and Angl.

The Strand, located at 155 5th Street, provides vehicle and pedestrian connections between Pacific Coast Highway and downtown Huntington Beach. Ample public parking is available on site, accessed from 6th Street.
