Lake Merritt & City Center Districts

CIM Makes an Impact in Oakland with 1.7 Million Square Feet

Lake Merritt & City Center Districts | Oakland, CA

CIM acquired an office portfolio in 2008 consisting of five established, institutional-quality Class A office properties totalling 1.7 million square feet in Oakland, California’s Lake Merritt and City Center districts.

Included in this acquisition was 1 Kaiser Plaza, an example of a stabilized office asset. This 530,000-square-foot, 28-story Class A office tower was built in 1970 as part of the Kaiser Industries corporate headquarters complex. Within a year of acquisition, our in-house Leasing team renewed a long-term lease with Kaiser Permanente at the property.

In keeping with our focus on enhancing communities, we participated in the formation of the City Center and Lake Merritt Business Improvement District (BID), which works to improve and promote the area. Our Leasing team has enhanced the district by securing additional office tenants and bringing popular retailers to the Downtown Oakland area. We’ve also acquired and developed other Oakland assets for our opportunistic strategy, further supporting overall neighborhood revitalization.

Oakland has become a highly desirable place to live and work in the Bay Area, with major employers including Southwest Airlines, Sutter Health and the University of California.
