Jack London Square
Bringing Families Together in the Bay Area
Since 1994, CIM has created dynamic destinations where families and individuals work, live and enjoy being together. One example is Jack London Square, a CIM project in Oakland, CA, that has become a vibrant hub for dining and entertainment as well as events and outdoor recreation.
After experiencing major economic challenges during the 1990s and early 2000s, Oakland launched a large-scale initiative for redevelopment and infrastructure improvements. The city’s proximity to San Francisco and strong employment base were two factors that attracted CIM to invest in the community. CIM acquired its first Oakland asset in 2007, and to date, we have owned and operated 14 assets across Oakland totaling almost 4 million square feet.
CIM acquired Jack London Square in 2016, recognizing its potential to provide new residences and other destinations to serve the local community.
Jack London Square Case Study
Learn how we helped transform a historic Oakland seaport into a premier community attraction.
Originally developed in the 1970s, Jack London Square was named for the author Jack London, who lived near the historic waterfront location. The mixed-use destination has become one of Oakland’s most identifiable landmarks and a premier spot for residents and visitors to dine, play and relax. A few of Jack London Square’s attractions include water recreation rentals, a movie theater, pop-up shops and tempting restaurants. The property, a symbol of the city’s seaport history, can be accessed by boat, car or train.
Jack London Square is ultimately slated to include a 250-room hotel and a second residential tower, both of which will add to its complementary mix of offerings. The Oakland community gathers at the property for over 60 events annually including a weekly farmers market, harbor tours and various holiday celebrations.
Jack London Square has contributed to a positive transformation in the Oakland community and represents another example of how CIM strives to create value and enhance communities.
