In 2017 CIM acquired Uptown Station, formerly a 1920s department store in Oakland’s Uptown district. Situated at the nexus of three arterial roadways (Broadway, Telegraph Avenue, and 20th Street) and positioned directly above the 19 St / Oakland BART station (located only three stops away from San Francisco), the building and location provided an opportunity to create a modern, mixed-use development that would appeal to Bay Area companies and local residents alike.

We were drawn to the Uptown Station project due to its central location, the limited supply of new creative office space in the Bay Area, and the compelling value proposition the property could offer potential office tenants compared to San Francisco creative office space. Our vertically integrated team worked together to transform the property into a 356,000-square-foot, eight story Class A creative office building with a multi-story atrium lobby and 43,000 square feet of ground floor retail space. During the redevelopment, we signed a lease agreement with Square, Inc. (NYSE:SQ) for the entire office space and a portion of the retail space. Our team also developed the retail space in the building and signed leases with Shake Shack and One Medical.

We announced the sale of Uptown Station in March 2021, having fully realized our business plan three years after acquisition. As a result of our work, Uptown Station continues to support the Oakland community by augmenting the city’s limited supply of Class A creative office space, bringing new jobs to the area, and offering a vibrant working environment where businesses can thrive. This project is just one example of how CIM adds value to individual projects while enhancing local communities.
